Civic Strategies
Dr. William Bloomfield of Civic Strategies authored a New York City Young Adult Task Force Report entitled The Time Is Now, which lays out recommendations on how to assist New York City’s 200,000 disconnected youth to get jobs and to complete their secondary school education. Dr. Bloomfield has worked with the New York City Young Adult Task Force, as well as the Advisory Group to JobsFirst NYC, to create a neighborhood-based youth employment collaborative. This project, being piloted in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, involves several providers who are also working closely with WPTI on building effective employer engagement strategies for both youth and adult populations. These include: Center for Family Life, Lutheran Family Health Center, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, and Turning Point. In addition to this project, WPTI has worked closely with Dr. Bloomfield and others on the task force to build pilot projects and consider ways in which youth organizations can be better prepared to meet the challenge of employing young people at scale in New York.
Heckscher Foundation for Children
The Heckscher Foundation for Children was founded in 1921 to promote the welfare of children, primarily in New York City. Through the support of the Foundation, WPTI is providing training and TA to the Heckscher Foundation Academy, a multi-year effort to connect aging out youth to employment and post-secondary options.
National H.I.R.E. Network and ReEntry.net
Legal Action Center’s National H.I.R.E. Network (Helping Individuals with Criminal Records Reenter through Employment) aims to increase the number and quality of job opportunities available to people with criminal records by changing public policies, practices, and public opinion. WPTI has brought the H.I.R.E. Network to present at several of our trainings that address adults and youth who have been part of the criminal justice system. Similarly, WPTI is developing strategies with ReEntry.net to articulate a plan to better assist practitioners working with persons who have felony convictions.
Public/Private Ventures (P/PV)
Instrumental in the initial thinking and launch of WPTI, P/PV has also been a partner and supporter of its work. In 2004, WPTI’s Lou Miceli partnered with P/PV’s Sheila Maguire to introduce the first in-depth job development training program for practitioners. This program, Working with Employers, has been replicated across the country and has trained over 100 job development staff in New York City.
Also in 2004, WPTI participated as a member of the initial design team to articulate a brand-new senior/executive management training program funded by the Clark Foundation. The P/PV Workforce Leaders Academy, the first of its kind in the country, has trained 40 executive and senior staff from the workforce development field and the public sector. WPTI continues to directly support P/PV staff in ongoing curriculum development for the program. |
